Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc disease is the gradual drying out and thinning of the spinal discs that cushion the vertebrae, usually as a natural part of ageing. As the discs lose height and flexibility, they cushion the spine less well, which can cause aching, stiffness and flare-ups of back pain. Despite the name, it is a wear-related condition rather than a true disease.
Symptoms
Degenerative disc disease often causes symptoms that come and go. Common signs include:
- Aching or stiffness in the lower back (or neck, if discs there are affected)
- Pain that flares up for days or weeks, then eases
- Pain that is worse when sitting, bending or twisting
- Relief when walking or changing position often
- Occasional pain radiating into the buttock or thigh
- Stiffness that is worst first thing in the morning
Causes
Disc degeneration is largely age-related, but several things speed it up. Common contributors:
- Natural age-related drying and thinning of the discs
- Everyday wear and repeated small stresses on the spine
- Heavy or repetitive lifting, especially with poor technique
- Being overweight, which adds load to the spine
- Smoking, which reduces disc nutrition
- A family history of disc problems
What helps degenerative disc disease?
Degenerative disc disease is usually managed well without surgery. The goal is to keep the back strong and mobile, manage flare-ups, and reduce day-to-day pain. Core strengthening, staying active and drug-free pain relief are the mainstays. A back pain patch worn over the sore area gives steady, medication-free relief during a flare, and mLab's NeuroPad offers drug-free nerve-targeted relief for radiating discomfort.
- Stay active - gentle walking and movement beat prolonged rest
- Strengthen the core and back muscles that support the spine
- Use good lifting technique and avoid prolonged sitting
- Use drug-free relief during flares - a back pain patch over the sore area
- Try mLab's NeuroPad for drug-free relief of radiating pain
- Manage weight and, if you smoke, seek support to stop
